Millville
splits on county-wide library proposal following public
hearing

February 9, 2009 | MILLVILLE -- Thursday night a public
hearing was held to discuss the proposition of a county
library, and the vote by the Town Council split 2-2
-- two for and two undecided.
Lana Jex said she was very much for a county library
and that she has been using the Providence library,
but "it's not adequate enough for me, I read about two
to three books a week."
Other community members had similar feelings about
the idea and felt that it would be worth the tax money
to have a library that could be available to everyone
in the county.
Kerri Williams said that a county library would benefit
a lot of people, as she related how she had taken her
son's scout troop to the Providence library with one
of the boys not being LDS. She said that while at the
library the boy came up to her and asked if there were
any books that weren't LDS. "I think that says a lot,"
Williams said.
Even those who weren't big readers themselves supported
a county library at the public hearing.
Jason Low, another community member, said "I'm in
favor; I'm not a reader but I love to come home and
see my kids reading."
Members of the community further went on and supported
the idea of a library saying that the Bookmobile did
not have a big enough selection, and that you had to
go in and know what you were looking for because of
the number of people that were waiting their turn.
After everyone in the community that had come to the
meeting had their say on the proposition of a county
library, the council closed the public hearing to vote.
The record that would be reported for Millville's stance
on a public library went in as two for and two undecided
for the county library.
Council members Jared Taylor and David Hair voted
in favor, and Mark Bodily and Brian Jensen were undecided.
Bodily and Jensen said that they were unsure that building
a new library for the county during the economy's recession
might not be the best time as taxes would have to be
raised to fund it.
Bodily said that if a library was built, he would
like to see every town and city in the county have to
pay the same amount of taxes for it rather than varying
from town to town as the proposition stands now.
The taxes that Millville residents would have to pay
for the new library would vary from $28 - $33 per person.
In other business, the council:
-- approved the license for the sign for Don's Auto
body shop.
-- discussed the city's support for sidewalks and crossing
walks to be built for the Millville Elementary children.
The sidewalks and crosswalks would encourage a healthy
lifestyle and increase safety for the children, and
would cost from $13,000 to $15,000, money that the school
is hoping will come from a grant they are applying for.
-- set a public hearing for March 15, 7:30 p.m., for
a conditional use permit for Larry and Aubrey Soul's
basement apartment.
