Garbage rates hiked in River Heights

By Diana Taylor

RIVER HEIGHTS -- The City Council increased garbage collection fees Tuesday.

The council voted 5-1 to change the resolution and increase garbage collection fees by $1. Under the new resolution a 60-gallon trash bin will cost $9.40 and a 90-gallon trash bin will cost $13.25. The rates reflect the Logan City rate plus an addition dollar to cover the cost of city administration.

The council decided to raise their rates after Logan City raised the city's fees.

"I think this is the time to do it (raise the garbage collection fees), if we don't we are going to turn around and ask for it again six months from now," Mayor Vic Jensen said.

Kent Parker, public works director, reported that although he has had some mechanical problem with the snow plow, snow is being removed as quickly as possible.

"I like to plow snow but, I've never seen a year where it comes so often," Parker said.

Councilman Rob Gines informed Parker that because there wasn't a street sign for 400 South and 700 East, an ambulance had trouble finding the street last week. Parker said the city has signs to put in and as soon as there's a thaw he will put them in.

The council closed the meeting and went into executive session because of pending litigation. The meeting was once again open after 45 minutes.

In other business the council heard from Don Davis, Cache County building inspector. Davis reported on procedures of inspections and building code.
