Summer's just around the corner, so here are some jobhunting tips

By Lesley Godfrey

Are you a lowly college student in need of some cash? Do you have housing deposits and tuition you need to pay? Does it always seem like there is never enough money? With the summer months rapidly approaching, it's not too early to think about securing a summer job.

There are many resources available that may aid you in your job search. Utah State offers a wide range of services to students looking for jobs. The Student Employment Office is in the Financial Aid Office of the Taggart Student Center Room 106. Just outside of the employment office is a job board that hosts on-campus and off-campus job postings.

USU employee Charles W. Oughton used the job board to find his job as a supplemental instructor. He said "the job board is very resourceful. It had all of the requirements needed for each job so I knew which ones I could apply for."

Work-study jobs are also an option supplied by the employment office. However, you must qualify for financial aid to apply for these jobs. "If you can't make it up to the TSC, the job board is posted on the Student Employment Website for your convenience.

The Department of Workforce Services is an option for students who can't find what they need on campus. The DWS works for the entire state of Utah, so if you are thinking about moving over the summer, they may have a place for you. The Logan DWS is at 446 N. 100 West. They have a job board inside their office and also a job board posted on the Department of Workforce Services Website.

Other staffing agencies that are available include Intermountain Staffing Resources, Kelly Services, LDS Employment Services, and SOS Staffing Services. If you are looking for jobs throughout the country, general job resource sites like rileyguide.com and monster.com will be beneficial.

For those upperclassmen and soon to be graduates the USU Career Fair being held Wednesday, March 3 in the TSC may just be your chance to impress your future employer. The Career Fair is put on by Career Services, whose office is located at 101 University Inn.

Stuart Perry, a Career Fair rookie, said "I'm nervous to meet prospective employers. I hope they like my resume." Several employers are lined up to fill the TSC Ballroom including AMI, Wal-Mart, Mervyn's, The Buckle, and others.

The Career Services Website gives a list of hints to help make your Career Fair experience beneficial:

-- Research which employers you would like to see.
-- Have knowledge of the organization so you can tell the employer why you want to work for them; it will help them to identify positions that you might be qualified for.
-- Don't wander around aimlessly. It is useless and a waste of time.
-- Start by clarifying your goals. Know why you are going to the Career Fair and what you want to get out of it. It helps to prepare a list of questions to ask employers you want to talk with. A carefully written one page resume is essential.
-- Prepare a one-minute commercial. You should:
· introduce yourself
· demonstrate that you know something about the organization
· express why you are interested in the organization
· briefly relate your background to what you know about the organization's employee needs.

Career Services staff member Randy Jensen said "It is important to be professional. Dress like you want the job." Resumes should be done neat and complete and you should show enthusiasm for what you are supposed to be interested in. Demonstrate confidence while maintaining eye contact. Demonstrate effective verbal skills. Communication is the most important.

In your search, remember that looking for work can be a lot of work, and the Web is a limitless resource for information. Search the Web. Find a place you want to work and watch for current job postings. Most important of all, talk with your professors. Networking is the key to making it in this world. Good Luck in your adventures.
