Cookbook raises money for Richmond's fire department

By Seth Quillen

RICHMOND -- You've probably heard of it, seen it, or even partaken of the delicious goodness inspired by the Richmond Fire Department cookbook. The book is filled with delicious recipes from Richmond City's finest and has been floating around the town for a while.

The cookbook, No More BURNT Offerings",was first conceived by the department's EMT President Katie Sanders as a way to raise money for the city fire department

"We were looking for fundraiser ideas and this one was in the air, so we went with it," said Sanders who has been volunteering since 1991.

The book is a novelty and unique to Richmond because most of the recipes included are straight from the homes of local firefighters. Fire Chief Lynn Bair's wife Janet contributed over a dozen recipes herself; some were old secrets from her mom, others were her own modified treasures. The book was capped off with several recipes from firefighters around the country found on the Internet.

Sanders, who contributed a great deal of recipes herself, said among her favorites are the beef mushroom pockets. "I've used it quite a bit," she said.

Fireman Safety Officer Larry Hatch who has been a volunteer for about 14 years raved about several dishes but is set on one chef.

"I got to say my wife's recipes are the best or I'll probably get in trouble," said Hatch.

Janet Bair does not currently own one, only because she has given them all away. "I give them away as gifts for Christmas and birthdays, they're great," she said.

Many fund-raising ideas were tossed around but with over 100 books already sold through word-of-mouth advertising and last year's Black and White Days, Sander's was happy with the decision and pleased with money earned from it.

"If you've got the support like we do you get a fairly good turnover, it was an awesome idea," said Sanders.

The money raised from the project has already been put to good use by upgrading and improving classrooms at the fire station. New tables and chairs were purchased along with VCRs and TVs for training videos.

There are about 75 books left and they can be purchased at this year's Black and White Days or you can contact Katie Sanders at (435)258-0054. Each cookbook costs $7 and $3 for shipping.

Sanders said to look out for more fundraisers in the near future, including personal first aid kits and a Rubber Ducky Derby, which has been a popular fundraiser for the March of Dimes for several years.
