Roses are red,
violets are blue,
How much do I really
have to spend on you?

By Stephanie H. Olsen

Many would-be-suitors wonder if the statement "You can't buy love" is really true, especially on Valentine's Day.

From the middle of January to the blissful day of Feb. 14, stores are filled with stuffed teddy bears, flowers and heart-shaped boxes full of goodies.

But how do poor college students show that "special someone" that they really care, when their money flow is somewhat of a trickle?

The secret to an inexpensive Valentine's date is to get the most for your buck. Listed below are some of the best deals in town to help save you money and time.

If you are looking for flowers, Pehrson's Floral, 1192 Canyon Road, Logan, has what may be the lowest price for floral shops. For a dozen red roses arranged in a vase you will pay $50. Tax is included in that price, but if you want it delivered add an extra $3.50.

If your heart isn't set on getting red roses, a little shop at 50 N. 800 East in Hyrum called Kristine's Floral and Gift might be just the thing. Owner Kristine Jenkins oversees all the arrangements that go out of her store. Jenkins is offering a Valentine's bouquet of roses and carnations for $29.95.

Jenkins wants customers to know, "We care about every bouquet that goes out of our store.A floral source that often gets overlooked is the one found in the local grocery store.

Lee's Marketplace, 555 E. 1400 North in Logan, is offering a Valentine's special of $23.99 for a dozen roses in a vase, or $13.99 for a dozen wrapped in floral paper. They also deliver, but watch out for that $10 delivery charge.

If your sweetheart has a sweet tooth, but only likes a certain kind of chocolate, Alvey's Candies, 1300 N. Main, Logan, has just the solution.

"We have some boxes already for people to come in and pick out their own chocolate," said employee, Lindsey Barson.

Out of the two candy shops in Logan, Alvey's is cheaper for half a pound of chocolates at $6.10. But if you are buying in bulk, the Blue Bird is better at $12.10 a pound.

If you are looking for a quiet sit-down prime rib dinner, Kate's Kitchen, 71 E. 1200 South, Logan, is running a special for $14.95 per person.

Also, the Bluebird Restaurant is holding a Valentine's buffet from 4 to 10 p.m. The buffet will feature prime rib, Malibu chicken, salmon, salad bar, drinks and all their featured deserts all for $12.95 a person.

If fast and easy is more your style and you just want to relax at home, Formosa Restaurant, 890 N. Main, Logan, offers a 10 percent discount with USU ID on its Chinese cuisine.

And last, but not least, remember Hallmark doesn't always say it better than you. A handwritten note expressing how much you care about someone could just be the highlight of the evening.
