Scooter's offers Hyrum a place for local music
By Kelli Dodgen
HYRUM -- What was once a movie theater in Hyrum is now a place where
crowds gather to hear bands and relax, known as Scooter's.
On one particular night, anticipation hangs over the crowd as the
band, New Transit Direction, sets up. The lead guitarist strikes his
first chords when the audience begins to scream and the show escalates
into a night filled with energetic performances. This is just one of
the typical nights at Scooter's.
Scooter's is a place where music lovers can come and hear bands such
as Rude Awakening and Seconds Away from Salt Lake City. Scooter's has
gained popularity from young adults as a place to enjoy music and meet
new people.
Jeremy Wilkins, a promoter for local bands, said, "I think Scooter's
is a great place to have a venue because it is very open and provides
a good atmosphere."
With a small number of places in the valley where local music can
be played, Scooter's has filled the void that many people have waited
for. "Since the venue Blacklist has closed, Scooter's has been a great
replacement," said Janell Firth.
Sarah Sisson is a frequent attender at Scooter's. "Scooter's is the
best venue in Cache Valley because the sound is good and it's easy to
get more intimate with the band," she said.
Scooter's is owned by Sylin Nelson. Nelson says Scooter's has at least
a show a month and is open for anyone to rent for parties.
But Scooter's won't be open for long. Its time will end when it is
renovated into a private school for K-12.
"It's really sad that it won't be there for long, it will be harder
for local bands to showcase their music," Sisson said.
