Nibley to get LDS stake center; construction to start in August By
Matt Eichner NIBLEY -- A "much-needed" stake center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be built in Nibley. The City Council unanimously approved the building permit at Thursday's meeting. Councilman Scott Wells said the new building was much needed following a brief discussion of the building's location, parking lot exits and the number of bathrooms. "I'm glad to see it come," Wells said. Because Nibley will have its own stake, a new building is required because of the many wards which use only one building currently, he said. According to Larry Herron, representative of the church and the firm of Jensen Haslem Architects of Salt Lake City, construction will begin in August and will take about a year. Dean Bolton, also of Jensen Haslem, said the general contractor will be out of Ogden, but the subcontractors who work on the building will probably be from the valley. The new church will have a capacity of up to 1,500 people when overflow seating is used, Herron said. Ordinance 02-03, a parking ordinance, was tabled because the council members who were present wanted to have input from those who were missing from the meeting, including Mayor Lynn Welker and two other council members, before a vote was taken. The council also decided that the ordinance needed more clarification on points such as ticketing people who may lay in the street or people who stop their cars to talk to people in the street. The council also is considering changing the penalty for unregistered and loose dogs from a warning to a fine for the first offense. The council unanimously approved a conditional use permit and business license for Becky Yeager for her home business, The Spirit Goat. She makes soap from her home. Also, the council unanimously approved a conditional use permit and kennel license to Courtney Obray for his home. The council also unanimously approved a conditional use permit and kennel license to Aaron Wiser for his existing home and his new home which hasn't been built yet.
