the department of journalism and communication
Glacus G. Merrill, a longtime Utah broadcaster and a friend of the department of journalism and communication, died Saturday at age 96. Merrill began his broadcasting career in 1938 as part owner and program director of KVNU radio in Logan. After serving in the Navy in World War II, he traveled to Clarksburg, W.Va., and built the first of many radio stations he would operate throughout the United States. He delivered more than 7,000 newscasts and editorials, always ending them with "Have a good day, neighbor." He was honored by the Utah Broadcasters as a pioneer in radio broadcasting. Merrill was the father of Darla D. Clark, who serves on the JCOM Professional Advisory Board. He also endowed the Glacus and Marie Merrill Scholarship, which is given each year to an outstanding USU student of broadcasting. Funeral was Thursday at Logan Third Ward.
