Millville debates whether to continue contribution to ice arena By
Meghan Dinge
MILLVILLE -- Discussions on whether Millville should continue funding the new ice arena in North Logan were held at the City Council meeting Feb. 7. Mayor Gale Hall told the council he has received three or four phone calls regarding the dissatisfaction of a few Millville residents, and felt the need to put the topic on the council's agenda to discuss their options. The majority of cities in Cache Valley, including Millville, have agreed to help fund the newly completed ice arena, with Millville's portion being $1,200 per year for about 10 years. Hall explained that a few citizens of Millville have been questioning how their financial support of the ice arena has benefited their community, feeling their money could be put to a better use that directly affects their town. Councilman Gene Eggleston supports the decision of Millville to continue funding the ice arena because of the limited recreation possibilities for youth in their town. Eggleston said the ice arena provides a place for their hockey teams and figure skaters to use. "I think we are looking a narrow window of opportunity for out youth. They don't have enough opportunities here in Millville," Eggleston said. "I think there's a bigger picture here to look at." The council concluded that they needed more information before a decision can be made on continuing funding. The discussion will be continued at the next meeting. In other business, the council approved the 911 fee increase that was discussed at length at the last city council meeting on Jan. 17.
