Floor exercise scores erase falls on beam as USU defeats Missouri

By Kevin King

Nicole Kilpatrick hung on to the all-around title by 0.75 points and the Aggie gymnastics team came from behind on the final rotation to defeat the University of Missouri, 193.900 to 193.025, Saturday at the Spectrum.

Kilpatrick had a 39.125 score. The sophomore tied for the floor title and the balance beam crown, while tying for second on the vault.

"It was a fortunate win for us," said USU coach Ray Korn. The team had to compete hard on the final event, and it did -- USU scored a season-high 49.175 on the floor, the eighth best in school history. Leading the way on the floor were three Aggies, who all recorded 9.875 scores, which tied their best floor marks of the season. Kristin O'Dell, Kilpatrick and Jessenia Abrego all reached that score to give USU the victory. In addition, Tina Ellis scored a season-best 9.85.

It was a competitive meet in the beginning.

The Aggies seemed to be losing ground during the third rotation. Kristen Bloom, Kim Scharman, Kira Nulph, and Ellis all fell off the beam. Kilpatrick was the first Aggie not to fall on the balance beam.

Missouri did not take advantage of the opportunity to capitalize on the Aggies' poor performance on the balance beam. Andrea Nerving and Leah Germund fell of the beam in each of their routines as well.

The mounting pressure for the Aggies to be able to win this meet was evident going into the floor routine.

"We needed to stay confident, refocus, relax, and do better", said team member Mika Houston.

"Now the race is on," said Korn. "We need to replace our present high scores with better scores to make this season's regionals and to possibly place in nationals."
