Brown hits from downtown as Aggies crush UCSB, 71-48

By Reuben Wadsworth

Utah State played the role of spoiler in snapping the University of California at Santa Barbaraıs five-game winning streak Thursday night, defeating the Gauchos, 71-48.

Shooting guard Tony Brown led the way for the Aggies with a 16-point performance, hitting 4-for-8 from the 3-point line. Whatıs more -- Brown did all of this while feeling ill.

³He can get the flu everyday if heıs going to play like this,² said USU head coach Stew Morrill.

With a trey early in the second half, Brown became the No. 3 all-time Aggie 3-point shooter.

Despite a 20-plus winning margin, the game was close early in the first half. UCSB was up 6-3 early. USU tied it at 15, then went on a 19-4 run to make it 34-19 after two Curtis Bobb 3-pointers. The Aggies were up 36-21 at the half.

The Gauchos cut the lead to 9 points, 41-32, with 16:35 to go in the second half. The Aggies came back and built a 20-point lead, 54-34, with 11:19 left and never looked back.

Morrill was pleased that his players werenıt taking ³silly² shots.

³Every guy was making the extra pass to get a better shot,² Morrill said.

Rock was especially unselfish moving the ball, Morrill said. Rock dished out 10 assists.

³This is a real fun win for us,² Morrill said. ³We had a lot of things go well. We played well for 40 minutes.²

One thing that went well for the Aggies was defense. USU held UCSB to 36.6 percent shooting.

³Our guys were setting awesome screens,² Brown said.

Reserve forward Dion Bailey chipped in 12 points for the Aggies, which ties his all-time high. Bobb and center Dimitri Jorssen had nine points apiece, while Shawn Daniels netted eight. Mike Vukovick was the only double-figure scorer for the Gauchos with 10.

USU plays next at Long Beach State University at 6:05 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain. Brown said the team needs to go into that game with as much emotion as it did against UCSB.
