Smithfield wants someone who'll work cheaply (or for free) to create overdue web page

By Katherine Romney

The Smithfield City Council will start looking for someone to help get Cache Valley's second-largest city on the map -- the Internet map.

James Gass, the city manager, proposed a plan to the council Wednesday for a Smithfield web page to be completed by the end of 2001.

"We are behind the times and the state," said Gass. "Smithfield is one of the last larger cities in the state not to have a web page. Logan, North Logan and even Hyde Park already have them."

Mayor Kent Ward expressed concerns during the council meeting about paying a professional to create and maintain a web page. Cobalt, an Internet company, will create a web page for $250 and then charge an additional $150 a month to maintain it, said Ward. He said he didn't think the city has this much money in the budget to spend on a web page.

"There is no one in the city office that has the experience," said Ward. "The council members don't have the knowledge or the time," said Gass.

The City Council said it would like to see someone in the community step up a volunteer to help with this project -- someone who has experience. Gass said he plans to advertise for the position in the monthly newsletter. Council memebers said they would pay for education expenses if a volunteer is interested but doesn't have any experience.

A web page is a service that Smithfield should offer to the community, said Gass. The page could have news of upcoming events, advertising and Smithfield history information, all at the click of a mouse. Ward said he would like to see the page have links to the Chamber of Commerce.
