Cox Electric given 60 days to comply with law on businesses in homes

By Sharalyn Hartwell

MILLVILLE -- The Millville City Council voted unanimously to grant Millville resident Earl Cox, owner of Cox Electric, 60 more days to comply with all of the city's ordinances for home-operated businesses before granting him another occupation permit.

The council decided in yesterday's meeting in City Hall to send a letter that would also indicate the council's notice of Cox's "considerable progress" in complying with city ordinances in the last 60 days.

"He's trying," Mayor Gale Hall said. "I think we, as a council, will have a better relationship with the city if we try to work with him."

"He really wanted to come here tonight and jump on people's heads, but he decided to stay home," council member Larry Lewis said.

According to the city ordinance, all home occupations by businesses should be secondary uses, and neighbors should not be aware of their existence. In addition, home occupations should not unreasonably disturb the peace, and only one vehicle may be in use in association with a home occupation.

Neighbors of Cox have complained to city officials that Cox Electric violates these ordinances.

Other items of discussion included whether to let girls from South Fields participate in the Miss Millville Pageant. Sue Bentley, the pageant director, spoke in behalf of the pageant and said two girls from South Fields were already planning to participate.

"I can't in my heart leave these two girls out," Bentley said. "This year I really feel it needs to go on how it has been."

It was decided to put the item on the agenda for the next council meeting on March 1.
