Mendon has its secrets on west side of the valley

By Kristopher Moore

Mendon, with a population of about 700, has long been a secret of Cache County.

Mendon is an old town, one of the first settled in the Cache Valley, and for all of its small size it is full of historical sites.

Mendon was settled in 1859 at the base of the Wellsville Mountains.

At first Mendon was known as the North Settlement, when apostles Orson Hyde and Ezra T. Benson from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to set up the first ward there.

Then a member of the church asked what the town should be named. Benson declared that the town should be called Mendon, after the town he was born in.

There is Mendon May every spring, and it is about to reach its 140th anniversary. Mendon May has a parade, singers, and even a Mendon Queen.

Daren Handy of Mendon speaks highly of his hometown: "I like it here, I feel safe and it's not too stuffy."

Mendon has six elected town officials including the mayor, Sydney Larsen. The Mendon City Council meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. All meetings are in the Mendon City Building, right next to the city square at 95 N. Main.
