Amalga gives ex-mayor extra time for construction of subdivision By
Reuben Wadsworth
Former Amalga Mayor Keith Jorgensen was granted an extension Wednesday to meet the conditions required for the construction of a 27-home subdivision. Due to extenuating circumstances -- Jorgensen being on an LDS mission in San Francisco -- the Amalga Town Council voted at its meeting to extend the deadline to March 1, 2002. Jorgensen returns from his service at the end of October, but the deadline was to expire before then. Evan Schmutz, Jorgensen's attorney, attended the meeting to plead Jorgensen's case. Schmutz said that since Jorgensen is out of town, it is difficult to get any issues resolved. Those issues include potential drainage problems on the site, the possibility of re-routing or burying the West Cache Canal, and a decision on how maintenance on the site will be handled. Brett Jensen, chair of the Amalga Planning and Zoning Committee, said he was frustrated Jorgensen started the project, "then up and left." Schmutz apologized and said there had been a certain degree of misunderstanding from both parties. "We don't want a controversy with the town," he said. Council member Keith Hansen made a motion to extend the deadline on condition that Schmutz would make quarterly reports on the subdivision's progress. The motion carried unanimously. In other business, Cache County Sheriff's Deputy Matt Shoemaker answered council members' questions on the number of traffic warnings that had been given around the town instead of citations. Council members said there is no standard for miles per hour above the speed limit in order for a citation to be issued. There is no written policy on the matter. "I feel there is value to the warnings given," Shoemaker said. The council approved the appointment of John Clark to finish the term of Paul Hansen on the Planning and Zoning Committee and appointed Delyn Bouck to serve as Planning and Zoning Committee secretary. March 10 was set as the date for a dog clinic.
