Same old story for 28 years: driver wheels books into tiny towns

By Emily Aikele

TRENTON -- For 28 years, Sherid Peterson, driver and librarian for the Bookmobile, has been making 18 to 20 stops a week around Cache Valley.

Thursday night Peterson was in Trenton as he is every second and fourth Thursday of the month. He arrives at about 4:45 p.m. and stays there about an hour.

"My customers are pretty steady but itąs been a little bit slower tonight," Peterson said. He also said one customer in Trenton had been checking out books from him for almost all of the 28 years that he has been driving the Bookmobile.

The Bookmobile is financed by the county and the state. Peterson drives around to all of the unincorporated little towns in Cache County but says that he doesnąt have a problem with books falling over. The bookshelves are slanted back so unless someone is driving crazily, the books shouldnąt fall off the shelves.

Peterson begins his rounds each day around 10 a.m. and finishes his day as late as 7:30p.m. sometimes. He parks at various places such as schools, churches, parks, and city buildings. In Trenton, the Bookmobile stop is by the city park.

Peterson said that there is a steady amount of children and adults who take advantage of the services provided at the Bookmobile.
