Providence resident pushing for a park at 300 South, 300 West By
Tyra Leonard
After reading a story about the fun of parades, Dean Hurd called on one of the kindergartner boys who was raising his hand. "I know what's better than a parade," the boy said. "It's a park. Parades only come every once in a while, but parks are there all the time." Hurd, of Providence, is proposing that the city builds a 1-acre park at 300 South and 300 West, near a new subdivision. Meadow Ridge Park would cost an estimated $56,345. Labor for the project is placed at $11,227, but Hurd said he would like to see the labor donated by people and businesses who want to see the benefits of a new park. Hurd said he doesn't care if the park is used only by people from the neighboring area or by people from all around the region; he just wants to see it get used. He said the plans of the park were designed in the interest of everyone. "That's what is so neat about this park," Hurd said. "There's basketball, volleyball . . . a jogging path that circles around it all. There is a large, safe play place for the kids, and plenty trees and lawn where parents can watch their kids from." The plans also include a pavilion and two outdoor grills so families can have accommodations for hosting reunions or parties. Although there is "something for everyone," Hurd said the park is designed for the safety and well-being of the children in the community. "Parks make marks on the hearts of children that can't be erased by the hands of time," Hurd said. Providence City Council plans on making a decision about the park sometime next month.
