Smithfied endorses option of $4 a month for green-waste collection By
Katherine Romney
Smithfield residents may be adding $4 to their utility bills each month so Logan volunteers can dispose of green waste properly. Kate Christensen, a member of the Curbside Green Waste Program, presented the program to the Smithfield City Council last week. A 90-gallon green container would be given to all residents who sign up for the service and it would be emptied weekly. The container would be used to hold all green waste such as grass, wood chips and leaves. "Green waste is filling up our landfills," Christensen said. "This is a good way to get rid of greens properly." The council responded positively to this idea after hearing that Cache County had already approved the program. Logan also approved the program and will start pickups in two weeks. This will save time because residents wil not have to dump the garbage, council member Keith Fortie said. The curbsides in Smithfield will look better after having proper garbage cans for the recyclable waste, he said. "This is something my wife would love," Mayor Kent Ward said. Weekly pickups will give residents more space in their traditional garbage cans and even allow them to exchange for smaller, less expensive, cans. Most of the cities in Cache County already have green waste drop-offs. Smithfield has two trash bin drop-offs for green waste, and they fill up regularly, Christensen said. She said Smithfield wants and needs the green-waste collection program. "Surveys have been done and the support looks good," Christensen said. Adding and removing customers to the curbside program will cost the city money. This is the only drawback that the council members could recognize. To help reduce the cost, households that are interested will be asked to commit to the service for one year, Christensen said. Plans to start implementing the program for Smithfield, if approved by the council, will begin in August.
