North Logan debates road widths, landscaping

By Holli Gunnell

NORTH LOGAN -- The Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council met in a joint meeting last week for a discussion of an initiative to develop roadways and set standard road designs for future renovation on North Logan roads.

Karen Nichols and Gary Horton represented Stantec, the engineering company contracted to design the roadways, and presented four possible methods for the initiative.

Two plans were for residential roadways. One involved a 50-foot-wide road and the other planned for 60 feet. The larger roadway would allow for more landscaping between the road and the sidewalk.

There were also two proposals for collective roadways, or main roads. One plan was for a 60-foot roadway, and the other for 66 feet. The 60-foot proposal allows for 11-foot lanes, whereas the 66-foot proposal calls for 13-foot lanes and a bicycle and pedestrian lane.

Concerns mostly are for the aesthetic vision that North Logan residents have expressed they want as a community. Mayor Jack Draxler said he felt it was important to maintain the "North Logan look."

He referred to ideas of native grasses, shrubs and trees as landscapes between the road and the sidewalk, stating that he thought this would give a "unique feel to the community."
