You thought 'Twilight' the book
was good? Skip the movie

on Nov. 21. Twilight is based on the No. 1 New
York Times best-selling series with over 17 million
books in print by Stephenie Meyer. Opening weekend Twilight
reeled in around $70 million and satisfied many fans
while others left feeling very disappointed. I, personally,
am one that was quite disappointed.
Twilightis a love story between a teenage girl
named Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and a vampire named
Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). The movie takes place
in cloudy, rainy Forks, Wash. The Cullen family is unlike
other vampires in that they don't drink human blood
to quench their thirst, instead they drink animal blood.
This strange relationship between Bella and Edward soon
develops into a strong love where they feel they can't
leave each other's sides. Just as everything seems to
be going perfectly, new vampires come to town to disrupt
their way of life.
I walked in the theatre with anticipation for an amazing
movie that would leave me breathless and make me wish
I was Bella Swan. Instead I left wishing I hadn't wasted
the money or the time. The movie was the most overrated
film I have ever watched. With all the hype I had expected
something nothing less than fantastic, but what I got
was dreadful. The special effects were pathetic, the
background music never matched the mood, and honestly,
the vampires were just not hot enough.
What stood out the most was the fact that the Cullens
are described in the book as the most beautiful, stunning,
perfect beings ever seen and sadly, they were just average
for me. Of course the looks alone didn't ruin the movie,
because I'm really not that shallow, I was just expecting
gorgeous, so it was a bit of a disappointment. The acting
was very weak and they need to fire their makeup artists.
The makeup was done poorly; they all ended up just looking
funny rather than looking beautiful.
I've never noticed background music in a movie before,
but when it destroys the moment, you can't help but
notice. There is a scene where Edward and Bella are
sat romantically in a tree together and the music is
thumping like there's an intense fight going on. I kept
expecting her to fall out of the tree or something by
the way the music pounded. It seemed to always be wrong
for the moment and tended to be very distracting.
And last were the special effects. The budget for
this movie was small for a Hollywood film, so I wasn't
expecting a lot of fantastic special effects, but I
would expect the few they use to be decent ... but they
weren't. The vampires would take off running (which
from the book is meant to be smooth, fast and graceful)
and I would start laughing. It was a joke! It looked
like when Wily Coyote would be chased off a cliff and
as he stood in the air his legs moved a million miles
an hour and his upper body didn't move at all. That
is exactly how it looked and I found it extremely funny.
I was just so disappointed with the special effects
I felt embarrassed for the actors.
Overall, it was very disappointing and I do not recommend
it. I think the books are good, but the movie is awful.
It's a difficult task to make a movie from a book because
you miss out on the thoughts of the characters so much
that it's almost impossible to make it a success. And
this movie just confirms that.
