What's up with 'Attack of the Clones?' By
Bryce Casselman Well, now that Harry Potter is finally out and The Lord of the Rings is just around the corner, I suppose it's time for those people out there that don't have Starwars.com as the homepage on their computer to get updated on the latest news about Star Wars Episode Two: Attack of the Clones. As many of us have heard since The Phantom Menace came out, Episodes Two and Three of the Star Wars Saga would take place about 10 years in the future from where we left off with Episode One. What we do know for sure through interviews, teasers, trailers and news updates on the official website are a few things: First, Anakin Skywalker, played by Hayden Christensen (The Virgin Suicides, Life as a House) is now 10 years older and a padawan learner under Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge! and the upcoming Blackhawk Down). It appears that through some events, Anakin and Obi-Wan are reunited with Amidala, played by Natalie Portman (Anywhere but Here, Where the Heart Is) who is now a senator in the Republic and haven't seen each other since peace was declared on her home planet of Naboo. Once together again, Anakin and Padme fall in love with each other. But it is against the Jedi code to fall in love. Very little has been said about Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, played by Ian McDiarmid (Restoration, Sleepy Hollow), but it is certain he figures in the plot in some way. A new character named Jango Fett, played by Temuera Morrison (The Island of Dr. Moreau, Six Days, Seven Nights) who is the father of Boba Fett, the bounty hunter that captured Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back, plays a strong role in the movie and also has a duel with Obi-Wan in a rainstorm. Other new characters in the film that little is said about are Count Dooku, played by Christopher Lee (Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring) and Senator Bail Organa, played by Jimmy Smits (Bless the Child). Finally, the name of the film is Attack of the Clones and very little information has been released on what and how the attack of a clone army will happen. From interviews, George Lucas has said that Episode Two is going to be a darker film than the first one. Beyond this, it is all speculation and waiting and for those of us who already have May 16, 2002, scheduled off from work to go to the premiere of this movie, they are the scraps we'll have to live on.
