New electric lines upset some in Smithfield, but council satisfied

By Marie Griffin

SMITHFIELD -- The City Council was informed at last week's meeting about projected upgrades to electrical service lines in the city. According to Steve Rush of Utah Power and Light, the upgrades should be finished by June.

The city is creating electric lines in areas that are in need of them. Some residents are opposed to the new lines.

Resident John Barnes believes it is unnecessary to create a whole new line instead of reinforcing the older ones.

Barnes claimed that his question had been addressed at previous meetings on the issue, but that "it was never answered." Barnes asked Rush to clarify.

"We think we did what we needed to do to solve the problem," Rush responded. "It was answered. Well, not to your satisfaction, but it was answered."

The council seemed assured that all the correct measures were being taken to implement the procedure.

Mayor Kent Ward confirmed, "You have purchased all the right of ways."

Rush agreed. "We wanted to come back to the council and make you aware of what we*re planning to do."

Rush explained that it would be a couple of weeks before the process begins. The latest date for completion is projected to be June 1.

The council thanked Rush for his commitment to the project.

Councilwoman Launa Lundberg said she was relieved to address the electrical problems Smithfield had been having. "I'll be glad not to have any power outages anymore," she said.
