Professor accused of mistreating horses

By Marie Griffin

A Utah State University professor of animal science was issued a citation alleging inhumane animal treatment last week. His horses were found to be suffering from malnourishment and neglect.

Logan police Lt. Russell J. Roper said the horses were "not being fed or cared for properly." They were in a field in the vicinity of 1300 W. 600 North. He said the animals were "skin and bones."

Logan [olice Sgt. Jeff Curtis, who was on the scene, said, "The horses were fairly young and hadn't been getting feed. They were frozen."

The call to investigate came Dec. 3, after which the police impounded one of the horses and took it to a veterinary clinic to be examined and rehabilitated. Veterinarian Diana Wittkopf was consulted. She agreed the horse was in poor condition. She said if the proper action weren't taken, the horse would starve to death.

Haven B. Hendricks, 60, of Providence, owns the horses. He has been at USU since 1979 and is an extension swine specialist with a doctorate in meat science. One particular course he teaches discusses management decisions based on nutrition and health.

Roper said Hendricks was issued a citation on four counts of inhumane animal treatment, a Class B misdemeanor.

Whether the horses are taken away from Hendricks and sold will be a forthcoming issue. Police are working on stabilizing the conditions of the horses.
