English professor helping Hispanic middle schoolers with Mexican-
American War drama

By USU public relations and marketing

Dr. Andrea Tinnemeyer, assistant professor of English at USU, is working with Mount Logan Middle students on a History Fair project highlighting Hispanic heritage in the United States.

Tinnemeyer has been meeting regularly with students Nayely Carfias, Izamara Sanchez, Liliana Hernandez and Maira Soto to advise them on their project. With Tinnemeyer's consultation, the students are writing a play centering on events of the Mexican-American War. They will produce and perform the play Dec. 19 at Mount Logan Middle School.

Tinnemeyer, whose specialty is the recovery of Hispanic literary texts, was introduced to this project by USU Multicultural center director Evarardo Martinez-Inzunza. Because he had interviewed Tinnemeyer during her hiring, Martinez-Inzunza was familiar with her professional work and her personality, and he knew she would create an excitement for learning among these students.

Martinez-Inzunza arranges liaisons between qualified USU faculty and local elementary and secondary students in an outreach project whose goal is to increase the percentage of minority students qualified for college entrance upon high school graduation.
