New York company donates $1,000, 'Earbags' to JCOM department

By the USU department of journalism and communication

Earbags of Sweden, the "official ear warmer of the 2001 Winter Olympics," has donated $1,000 and dozens of sample Earbags to the department of journalism and communication at Utah State University.

The New York City-based outdoor apparel company manufactures cold-weather earmuffs without a band that hold them on. The Earbags are fleece and snap over the ear.

The Earbags company is an official licensee for the Salt Lake City Olympics. The donation to the journalism department will go toward student interns who will help distribute and promote Earbags, carrying the official Olympics logo, during the Olympic Games in February.

"We are delighted to be able to work with students from USU during the Olympics," said Valerie Ciptak, Earbags' sales director in New York. "For us it's a win-win arrangement, to promote the Swedish way to stay warm at the Winter Games and to work with some talented young people."

Senior PR major Angela Peterson is one of the Earbags interns and has already started working with Ciptak as a media liaison and in contact with Olympics officials in Salt Lake City. She and other USU PR students will work full time with Ciptak during the Games.

"This is great real-world experience for our students, not only to work with a national company on its media relations and marketing, but also to get access to the Olympics," said journalism department head Ted Pease.
