Lewiston says no to money for ice rink

LEWISTON -- A Cache Valley woman seeking funds for an ice rink was turned down by the City Council at its meeting last week. Janet Borg, head of the Bridgerland Community Ice Arena fund-raising committee, came to the council to ask Lewiston to donate the money from its recreational tax refund to the project. The council rejected Borg's request, saying it would rather spend the money on things that would more directly affect their own town. The council also concluded a discussion on the rezoning of the city. Non-use zones were eliminated and other zones, such as agricultural and dairy zones, were better defined. The Ccouncil will soon be submitting city ordinances for codification, and spent a portion of the meeting rewriting and fixing a few of the ordinances. "We felt like our ordinances in general were even conflicting,"said council member Paul Dent. "We went through them a bit so we weren't embarrassed when we gave them for codification." An additional problem addressed at the meeting was the fact that Lewiston only has one antenna for amateur radio signals. Apparently, amateur radios pick up emergency signals as well as the normal signals. It is a federal offense for amateur radio operators to pick up the signals from emergency vehicles and personnel. "I didn't even know that this was a problem," said Mayor Russell Hirst. "I see the need for two radios because if we get in a major disaster, they both need to be running." Fire Marshal Gerald Smith said he had no idea of the problem either. The council agreed to examine the budget and find funds to support
an additional antenna in Lewiston. |
