Pink trees, snaky trees, jungle trees -- all in book by River Heights kids
By Nancy Heiner
RIVER HEIGHTS -- Every one of Cheri Carroll's students has been published. Not in the usual sense, but their words and drawings do appear in a book, albeit a parent-funded one. Carroll started last year with her Wellsville Elementary second-grade class. Each student wrote a page-long story and illustrated it. Parents could choose to buy the book. "Not one of them complained when they saw the books," said Carroll. Now she teaches at the new River Heights Elementary, and this year the whole school is getting involved. Each class is contributing a story and a picture. Most of the stories and pictures are in. The children wrote stories about trees: jungles, hiding in trees, snakes in trees. The pictures show trees in different seasons, trees in pink bloom, trees with children under them. "This is more work than I thought it would be," Carrol said. This year's book is a thank-you to Icon's Scott Watterson for 100 trees donated to the new school's grounds, and to Zollinger Construction for planting them. "I don't know if it's really a surprise," Carroll said. Some of those who helped with the donation and planting have children
