Mendon offers 'the square' at Center and Main as site for elementary school

By Kendal Bates

MENDON -- Could a new elementary school be on its way to Mendon? If some of Mendon's elected officials get their Christmas wishes, it might happen.

Bruce Anderson, a Mendon council member, says the Cache County School District is planning to build an elementary school in the valley. The district is looking at Hyrum as a possible site for the school.

Mendon Mayor Sid Larsen outlined a tentative proposal and sent it to Cache School Superintendent Steven Norton, listing the things Mendon would do to land the school.

The proposal said Mendon would donate property at Center and Main, otherwise known as "The Square," for the school, and the LDS church would donate the use of its parking lot for the school during the week. Mendon would construct all curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and road restructuring needed for the school, and would also provide water to the school at no cost for 10 years.

In return, Anderson said, the city would ask the school district to build and maintain the elementary school, allow the city to use the school for a town hall, gymnasium, kitchen, and library, and ask the school to provide office space for the city council and the mayor. Anderson added that Mendon should pay as much as possible to land the new school.

Larsen said the school would "return the Mendon Square" as the center of the community with a school, church, fire hall and store. "Many communities as they grow begin to build structures outside the center of the town which promotes sprawl," Larsen said.

Larsen said Mendon would like to participate with the school district to better serve the citizens of Mendon and College/Young Ward, Petersboro, and Cobblestone by donating whatever means it could to the worthy cause of building the school.
