Staying under budget called a priority for Mendon fire station
By Kendal Bates
MENDON -- The Mendon fire station has been "in the works" for almost eight years, and many City Council meetings have been devoted to bouncing around ideas for the project. Last Thursday's meeting was more of the same. Tom Jensen, from Jensen Haslem Architects, was at the meeting to showcase the layout and talk about cost estimates for the fire station. Two years ago Mendon raised taxes to enable a $15,000-a-year payment on a $200,000 loan for the new building, said City Clerk Paul Cressall. The proposed budget for the entire project is around $245,000. Jensen recommended the city hire or appoint a contractor to price all the individual components for the project, so the city would be sure to stay within its proposed budget. If the actual prices land under the budget, Fire Chief Ray Olsen says he hoped the city would add a tower to the station where fire hoses could be hung and dried. Jensen Haslem estimated the additional tower's price at $17,000. Council member JoeYonk and Olsen both expressed confidence that the actual price of building the station would fall under the estimated $244,000. Mayor Sydney Larsen said, "If it's going to go over the budget, then don't even start (the project)." The mayor expressed his full support and enthusiasm for the station, but reiterated that it wasn't worth breaking the budget. When completed, Jensen reported that the fire station will house up
to nine fire-related vehicles that the county would provide, and a meeting
hall for the City Council. |
