Home gets a business license to sell . . . whatever it is
By Rosanne Radcliffe
PROVIDENCE - Until Tuesday night's City Council meeting, small business licenses may have been to easy to acquire. Joe and Calleen Marshall of Providence were on the agenda to be granted a business license for their home to be turned into an office for sales representatives. Their business is called J&C Marketing, at 400 Spring Creek Road. Without the Marshalls in attendance, a council member said it seemed simple enough to approve the license. Council member Michael Lewis moved to approve without hesitation. Before a second could be heard, council member Joe Campbell questioned what the business sold. Council members Jay Hicken and Paul Cook both responded with their concerns about approving business licenses without someone in attendance to explain the business to the council. "In the past we have made it necessary for someone to be here so they could understand (Providence) traffic, neighbors, and so on, so they could understand these small business licenses," Cook said. Lewis then withdrew his motion to approve the license, considering the council's worries. Campbell proposed it should be mandatory for an applicant to attend the council meeting that will be discussing his or her request for a business license. Recorder Skarlett Bankhead said the Marshalls did show her a little of their plans and items to be sold through their business, but it was not completely clear. "They sell silk-screening decals or something," Bankhead said, "business cards and other such things too." With this small explanation, Mayor Alma Leonhardt suggested the license be approved, pending a clarification from one of the Marshalls. Lewis then again moved to approve the license and added, with some humor, as long as someone on the city staff would check it out to see "that it is not illegal, not immoral, and non-fattening." After the discussion, the council unanimously approved. Because of the holidays, Providence City Council will not meet Dec. 28. The council's next meeting will be Jan. 11.
