New aquatic center makes big splash By
Sam Springer While temperatures continue to dabble in the high 90s, a place where many Cache Valley citizens seem to be escaping the summer heat is the Logan Aquatic Center (LAC). In August 1999, Logan city began to break ground on a new community pool that held its grand opening two years later and is now in its second year of operation. "I love swimming here, it has everything," said 12-year-old Ben Murray. The LAC has three pools that hold approximately 800,000 gallons of water. The kiddie pool slopes in depth from six inches to three feet, while the Olympic size portions of the LAC range from four to 13-feet in depth. In the larger pool there are two diving boards. One is a high dive springboard and the other is normal height at about three-feet. "The slides are my favorite part of coming here," said 10-year-old Jason Garcia, "but the diving boards are also very fun." There are plenty of kids that agree with Garcia, with lines for the two slides reaching in length from 15 to 20 minutes because of the amount of kids waiting for a turn. The two slides differ with one twisting and turning like a coiled snake and the other dropping straight down. There is a great deal of lifeguards on hand at any given time. Whistles are ringing at a steady rate so as to keep each patron safe. "I donšt have a problem with my kids coming here alone anytime," said mother of two, Sue Merritt," I feel that the kids are in good hands with well trained lifeguards." The LAC is open from noon to 8 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost of a day of swimming is $4, senior citizens only pay $3, and children younger than three get admitted for free. If you are interested in regularly attending the LAC, you can purchase a 10-time punch pass for $30. Season passes are also available.
