Musicians snag PEARL awards for faith-centered arts By
Russell Dixon
Jenny Oaks Baker and Hilary Weeks each took home three PEARL awards last week at the McKay Events Center at UVSC in Orem. For three years, Excel Entertainment of Salt Lake City has sponsored and produced the Pearl Awards, which honor "excellence in artistic achievement among artists, performers and musicians who have a faith centered world-view." The Faith Centered Music Association presents the PEARL awards annually. "The entire event was produced and staffed by professionals in the music industry who volunteer their time and efforts to make this awards presentation a reality," according to a release from Excel. Other winners included Peter Breinholt (Performing Artist of the Year), Kenneth Cope (Male Vocalist of the Year), Sam Cardon (Producer of the Year) and Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband (Group of the Year). Weeks won honors for Female Vocalist, Songwriter and Inspirational Album of the Year. Baker took the award for Instrumentalist of the Year, Instrumental Album and Recording of the Year. The evening also featured live performances by Lex de Azevedo, Hillary Weeks and Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband The show's host, Thurl Bailey, took home two awards, including New Artist of the Year. The former forward for the Utah Jazz added his own charm to the evening, sporting a sleek look in his custom fit tuxedo. Co-host Eric D. Snider also worked the crowd with his playful humor and quick-wit jokes. Because of some filming difficulties during the show, what was planned as a two- or three-hour event lasted nearly six hours. However, between Snider's comic relief and periodic breaks, the crowd stayed full of energy and managed to look alive for the cameras in spite of the late night. The awards will be broadcast on KJZZ-TV on Aug. 20. It was also broadcast live on LDSRadio.com with pre- and post-show commentary and interviews from Scot and Maurine Proctor of MeridianMagazine.co.
