Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

Ag College plays host to barbecue at closing social

By Lisa Rose Woodworth

April 25, 2008 | Nearly 100 USU College of Agriculture students and faculty attended the college's annual closing social at Willow Park on Thursday evening despite the late-April snow.

Braden Jensen, an agribusiness major and the newly elected ASUSU College of Agriculture senator, planned the event with his student council. Together, they served 1,000 skewers of marinated and grilled Korean fire meat. Council members bundled around the grills to keep warm while they chatted about spring brandings and the oncoming finals week.

Jensen presented several awards to students in the college for their outstanding service through the year. Brian Woodworth, 2007-08 pre-vet club president, was the only one present to accept his certificate and candy bar.

Jensen and his council received discounts on many of the dinner entrees: the beef from Earlands, potatoes from Kents Marketplace and the brownies from the Pie Dump, all of Tremonton. Café Sabor, of Logan, borrowed a space heater and food warmers for the social.

The closing social is traditionally the College of Agriculture senator's first programming event. Ag Week follows shortly after the 2008-09 school year begins. Jensen said he is excited for the year that lies ahead.
