April 23, 2008 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- Having streets in
River Heights repaved may be an inconvenience, however
it will not cost the city anything.
Residents in parts of River Heights may notice the
surface of some city streets chipping apart. Last summer
River Heights city council along with street consultant
Lynn Millard, decided certain streets around the city
needed to be resurfaced.
Streets that were repaved were Apple Brook subdivision,
Clover Ridge Subdivision, Griffin Lane, 500 East from
River Heights Blvd. to 500 South. During this winter
the slurry that was laid down started to strip off.
It was decided to use slurry over rock chips, because
slurry lasts as long as rock chip but is cheaper.
Public works supervisor Kent Parker said, the oil
that was used to coat the seal failed and was the reason
the slurry didn't stick.
Morgan Paving is the company that laid the slurry.
Parker said, "It wasn't their fault."
Street consultant Lynn Millard said the equipment
that mixed the oil was not calibrated right, and that
is why it did not stick.
The city council is now working with Morgan Paving
to get the streets repaved as soon as possible.
Parker said, "They have swept it 3 or 4 times with
the street sweeper… all of it has to come up before
they can lay it down again."
Morgan Paving will put on the new slurry as soon as
there are consecutive 70-degree days, Said Parker.
Lynn Millard said, "We have all the confidence in
the world in them, they know what to do to get it right."
