When a frog is put into a boiling pot of water it will hop out quickly. When a frog is set in a pot of cold water with the temperature slowly rising, the frog will be boiled and die. Today, sadly there are many people who are slowly being boiled in pornography. What is it about pornography that makes it such a bad habit? Why are so many people addicted to viewing such degrading material? Does this affect the individual only?

I want to discuss three areas of this topic to help answer the questions previous. First, I will give definition of pornography to obscenity to obsession. The second area is how pornography affects the individuals that participate in its filth. The third area is the effect that pornography has on a family.

We can't deny that it's out there, but we can choose not to embrace it or let it embrace us.

The best definition of pornography is put simply as viewing material that is made to bring sexual arousal. This means that porn is more than just not having clothes on but also just wearing a bikini or Speedo, kissing outlandishly and so forth. The presentation of porn is degrading to the opposite sex and is a way of getting a cheap thrill. When viewed continuously, the onlooker is slowly being desensitized. What started out as looking at the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated, could then lead to curiosity and on to nude photos. This process is slow but very camouflaged. When a person looks at porn there is a hormone in the brain that is released called Epinephrine . Epinephrine locks the image in the brain and is able to recall it anytime. It causes a desire for more. The victim can move into the level of obscenity.

Obscenity is material that is disgusting and offensive. This includes bestiality, pedophiles, rape, and homosexuality. There are few that realize the damage they are doing to themselves before it's to late. Simple pleasures become obsessions and begin to rule the lives of it's victims. The growing industry of pornography is making millions of dollars off of this sly and leisurely process.

Pornography affects everyone who use it. Most users disregard or are blind to the effects pornography has on them. This is due to the slow and gradual process. Viewers may look at members of the opposite sex as objects rather than people, only seeing them as body parts. The individual falls into lust more easily. Individuals see porn as fun and entertainment and become blinded by the consequences and pay the follow. Social isolation, low self-esteem, and consumption of time and money are some results that follow porn. Viewers often think they are only hurting themselves because they look and view in secret when no one else is around. One major consequence of pornography is the need to live what you see. Former police officer, Darrel Pope , did a study of 38,000 sex offenders over a 20 year span. When asked what led them to committing their crimes, 41 percent of them pornography was a factor.

Pornography is sad and extremely hard habit to break. Viewers become addicted and in turn, addiction can lead to crime. A man who was at one point addicted to both drugs and pornography was asked which of the two was harder to give up. He was quoted saying, "I could give up the hardest of drugs twice as easy as I could porn."

The effects of pornography on a parent in a family are devastating. Husbands who look at porn regularly begin to get secretive, short fused, and exclusive. It usually starts out as soft porn but then leads the hard and expensive porn. Money is usually spent behind the spouse's back. In some cases, pornography can lead to bankruptcy. Pornography causes families to fall apart. Trust is broken and the special and most precious acts is lost. It leaves spouses feeling betrayed and hurt. It is a slow and sorrowful process that sometimes leads to divorce and break down of the family unit.

Pornography is easily accessible but it is the stronger and wiser individual that avoids it at all costs. If someone is already in the boiling pot and wants to get out there are plenty of organizations out there willing to help recover from the addiction of Pornography. It is never to late to stop and start a new. Make a stand and stop a growing industry in its tracks. The effects of porn are great and detrimental.
