Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

April 21, 2008 | MENDON -- The greenhouse that started as a hobby for Barry and Tawna Fonnesbeck has grown into a thriving, sought-out business. For 14 years now, the Fonnesbecks have been selling their plants. Fonnesbeck Greenhouse is now an acre in size, and sells thousands of plants each year. From trees and shrubs, to poinsettias and pansies, this quaint greenhouse has it for you.

Not only does it supply its customers with the plants they need, it is pleasing to the eye. Upon entering, vibrant colors like red, purple and green surround you. Metal butterflies and wind chimes hang from the ceiling. Plants are scattered throughout the store along with many necessary gardening tools. Once leaving the enclosed section of the store, one is greeted with a Garden of Eden, abundant with color from different flower species, trees and shrubs. It even has fountains babbling with ice-cold water.

"My husband is the one with the green thumb," said Tawna.

Fonnesbeck Greenhouse is a family run business, with their children, their children's spouses and even Barry's mother helping.

"Yep, we all work together. Sometimes we will hire some high school kids to help move things, but mostly we do the work," said Tawna.

From Idaho to Salt Lake City, Fonnesbeck Greenhouse has become well known and desired for many all over the country, and business keeps coming.

Though some greenhouses close during winter months, Fonnesbeck Greenhouse stays open year round. When perennials and shrubs aren't being sold, poinsettias are popular and in demand. Though some months may be slower than others, this dedicated family continues to work and provide a positive experience for their customers.

If you are interested in purchasing any greenery at Fonnesbeck Greenhouse, they can be found at 100 W. 214 North in Mendon. You can also contact them by phone at 435-752-1962.
