Today's word on journalism

Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

Millville council appoints new member

By Leah Lopshire

APRIL 18, 2008 | MILLVILLE -- After City Councilman Ryan Pierson resigned, the council had the task of finding his replacement for the remainder of the term until December 2009. After having the advertisement out for a couple weeks the response was slim with only "one submit for council," Mayor Michael Johnson said. The only applicant is Dave Hair.

After the mayor read Hair's letter aloud to the council that expressed his desire to become a part of the council the mayor said, "If we choose to appoint we will have to do it next meeting," since Recorder Rose Mary Jones was not present at this weeks meeting.

The discussion was short on whether Hair was a good choice. Council member Brian Jensen said of Hair, "I think Dave is very qualified since being on it two terms." He went on to add, "Dave's experience has proven him to be a good asset."

The rest of the council agreed with Jensen and the vote to appoint Hair as the new council member was unanimous.

His swearing in as the new council member will take place on May 1 during the next council meeting.
