Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

Man sentenced for damaging house

By Bethany Crane

April 17, 2008 | Brian Leavitt, 28, pleaded guilty in 1st District Court yesterday to class B and C misdemeanor charges related to damaging a home.

His sentencing came after a brief explanation to Judge Gordon J. Low. The felony charges were dropped and a $1,000 fine was applied for the damages done to a home Leavitt threw a rock at.

Leavitt went to the home to pay some money to people he owed in a civil litigation. After the residents didn't answer the door he threw a rock in the direction of the house, and upon hearing the thud they came outside. Leavitt's attorney, James Retallick, defended Leavitt's actions as unintentional damage done.

Leavitt received a $1,000 fine which will be due by Aug. 1. Leavitt had a previous conviction for civil assault, which he received a fine and counseling for.
