Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

Cooking 101: Easy treats

By Errin Stevenson

April 16, 2008 | It is nice to have a list of quick and easy treats for surprise guests. There is nothing worse then people showing up and not knowing how to entertain. With only a few ingredients included, these treats are always good and always a treat.

Easy ranch dip for veggies
1 c. mayo (you can use reduced fat)
1 c. sour cream (you can use fat-free)
2 T. dill weed
2 T. bon appetite
Just simple whip these ingredients together and place the dip into a nice dish. Cut up veggies and place them around the dip and you have a great treat!

Super Bowl smokies
1 pkg. bacon
1 pkg. little smokies
1ž2 c. brown sugar
Cut bacon in half lengthwise. Wrap the halved bacon around the smokie and put a toothpick through to keep wrapped. Place on pan and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cook at 325 for 30-50 minutes; just depending on how crisp you like your bacon.

Slim-trim fruit dip
1 yogurt (flavor of your choice)
1 small tub of cool whip
You can choose the flavor of your dip! Just pick out a yogurt and mix it with the cool whip! Serve with fruit. You can make this fat-free by choosing fat-free yogurt and cool whip too. It is wonderful too.

No-Bake terds (cookies)
1 stick butter
2 c. sugar
4 T. cocoa
1ž2 c. milk
1 t. vanilla
1ž2 c. peanut butter
3 1ž2 - 4 c. quick oats
1ž2 - 1 c. coconut
Put the first four ingredients in a medium saucepan on medium heat and bring them to a boil. Let boil for 30 seconds. Remove saucepan from heat and let stand for 1 minute. Add vanilla and stir. Then stir in the oats and coconut until the mixture becomes a thick and gooey consistency. Lay out 2 feet of aluminum foil or wax paper. Simply drop 2 T. of cookie mix, forming a cookie, onto the foil or paper. Continue until your mix is gone. Then let sit for 5 minutes and enjoy!

Hope you enjoy these quick little recipes. They all take very little preparation, time and ingredients!
