Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

USU football concludes spring drills with 'home' team winning scrimmage

By C. Jake Williams

April 14, 2008 | The USU football team wrapped up its spring drills Friday with the annual Blue and White Scrimmage. The home team won -- a spectacle not seen in Romney Stadium last season -- by the score of 14-10.

Stanley Morrison, a redshirt freshman playing wide receiver, scored both home-team touchdowns. Quarterback Sean Setzer found Morrison late in the scrimmage on a screen pass, and Morrison turned the corner for what became the winning touchdown.

"I think he opened some eyes today," head coach Brent Guy said of Morrison.

Setzer is competing with three other Aggies for the 2008 starting role, but his touchdown toss was accompanied by an early interception.

The visiting Aggie squad, unable to get into the end zone, converted a 30-yard Chris Ullinski field goal for a 3-0 lead. The home team trailed 10-0 after running back Derrick Cumbee's 28-yard scamper before Morrison's twin scores sealed a victory.

"We finished strong when we needed it," said Setzer.

The Aggies showcased their newfound depth at almost every position simply by holding the 98-play scrimmage. In years past, the Aggies lacked sufficient linemen, for example, to hold a game-type simulation.

"This is really the first time we've had the format, the ability to play what looks like a game," said Guy. "We have a lot of depth."

The Aggies are coming off a 2-10 season, including a winless record at home.

The new season begins Aug. 30 at UNLV.
