Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

Council decides against permitting sales at Millville's town celebration

By Leah Lopshire

April 11, 2008 | MILLVILLE -- At the Town Council meeting an item not on the agenda was brought up by council member Jared Taylor. "People have called me and want to do booths at the city celebration. I didn't know if we ever did that?" Taylor said. One of the members replied to Taylor by saying that Millville has not had booths in the past.

' Discussion then went to questioning what kind of booths are people wanting to set up. One of the groups wanting to set a booth up is Options for Independence, which would be an informational booth. Taylor said that he told them that it would be fine unless he got other feedback from the council. The council agreed that information booths should not be a problem as long as they are not trying to sell anything.

Taylor then brought up a family that was wanting to set up a booth to sell food. He gave them the same response saying he would get back after (he) got council opinion.

At the city celebration every year everything is free including food, therefore making the council feel that there would be no benefit in having booths that would be selling anything.

Secretary Rose Mary Jones said,"People don't come with money so unless we advertise it wouldn't help the vendors."

Councilman Brian Jensen agreed saying, "Unless we start charging (for food and a cover charge) we should say no."

Mayor Michael Johnson brought up the point that it would not be beneficial to vendors also because "it's not an all afternoon thing." People don't stay at the park all afternoon, he said. Most families come for a little bit then leave.

"I don't think it's needed. I would just assume not," he said. The council agreed with him.
