Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

Hyde Park's spring cleaning starts Monday

By C. Jake Williams

April 11, 2008 | HYDE PARK -- Piles of branches and garden trimmings will soon line the streets of Hyde Park as part of a continued annual program to beautify the city.

Spring Cleanup begins the morning of April 14 in the southwest corner of the city. Dump trucks and backhoes will visit each neighborhood only once over a period of four to seven days removing piles of greenwaste as a service to the community.

"It helps out the citizens so that they don't have to haul it to the landfill," said Public Works Director Mike Grunig.

Citizens are urged to pile their waste next to the street by April 14 regardless of where in the city they reside, even though those in the northwest corner of town have approximately three extra days before crews come through their neighborhoods.

"We go through neighborhoods one time only," stressed Grunig.

Grunig, who is from Smithfield but married a Hyde Park native, has been involved with Spring Cleanup for 16 years.

"I think it's a good program," said Grunig. "It's good for the citizens."
