High heels and baby steps
By Natalie Archibald
April 10, 2008 | Over one hundred men in high - heel
shoes with purses collecting money is not something
seen everyday around the USU campus.
These men are carrying purses to raise money for the
"Walk-a-Mile-in-Her-Shoes." The event is hosted
by SAVVI (Sexual Assault & Anti-Violence Information)
in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This
event gives men the opportunity to walk a one mile course
in high heels and to raise awareness and prevent sexual
violence at Utah State.
"The heels aren't too bad, it's the rubbing on my
feet and ankles that hurts the worst," said Kyle Heywood,
a freshman here at USU. "I have a lot of respect for
girls that do this."
This is Heywood's first year walking and he said it's
hard; he takes baby steps to keep his balance. He said
it will take time to get used to walking in high-heels.
"The first time I walked, after 10 minutes I was ready
to be done," says Heywood. "I already have blisters.
I had to change my shoes."
SAVVI provides all sizes of shoes for the participants
or the men can find their own pair.
Heywood is a member of the One-in-Four club on campus
that educates men about rape and sexual assault. He
has learned how to help friends who were victims.
"I didn't realize what a problem [rape] was and it
really took me back," said Heywood. "It's a problem
that affects everyone, both the victim and the perpetrator."
One in four women has been the victim of rape or attempted
rape according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
"I think everybody directly knows someone who is a
survivor of rape," says Heywood.
Each participant must be sponsored with no minimum
dollar amount. The funds raised will help support the
SAVVI Office and USU's One-in-Four Chapter.
