Liberal Patriot:

"Molly Ivins was an unabashed patriot, and it drove right-wingers nuts. Conservatives somehow got it fixed in their brains that patriotism meant being in lockstep with their ideology, that dissent was treason. Molly made a career of reminding them otherwise, always careful to point out how cute they were when they acted like fools."

--Gary Cartwright, senior editor, Texas Monthly, 2007. Molly Ivins (1944-2007), a sharp-witted and clear-eyed columnist who died of cancer last year, was an unapologetic liberal. She once observed, "There's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed."

P&Z approves permit for River Heights home business

By Paul Kelley

April 2, 2008 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- The River Heights Planning and Zoning Commission approved a conditional use permit for a resident.

Shane Rich runs a home business out of his 198-square-foot shed in his back yard. Upon receiving a River Heights business permit last year, Rich was not told he would need a conditional use permit also.

A public hearing was held to discuss the matter with the commission and the community. Operations of the business were discussed in the hearing.

"I am a mechanical engineer, I do machine design. I don't do much by way of manufacturing," Rich said.

Conditions of the permit are as follows: design work, prototype construction, and engineering, no out of home employees. Machinery in the shop can only be used during the times of 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The commission unanimously approved Rich for the permit.

The commission also discussed further the finalization of the city's General Plan.
