Car-truck accident sends woman to hospital

By Julie Oliver

April 7, 2004 | LOGAN -- An accident at the intersection of 300 South and Main Street on Monday afternoon sent one driver to the hospital.

The collision of a car and a semi truck resulted in Colby Brown, 20, driver of the black 1997 Nissan Altima, being brought by paramedics to Logan Regional Hospital. She was released later that day.

Brown, traveling north on Main Street and attempting to turn left onto 300 South, collided with the truck in the outside lane traveling south on Main. The driver of the truck was Bryan Call, 44, of Weston, Idaho.

The accident report indicates the Nissan started to turn left as the semi entered the intersection. The impact occurred at the rear end and right side of the Nissan and the front bumper of the truck. The Nissan was spun 180 degrees during the impact.

Witnesses stated that the light was yellow as the truck entered the intersection. The witness reports state another potential factor in the accident: "The black car was making a left turn and she had to wait until a guy on a bicycle turned left in front of her," said witness Ronald Pagac, 56, of Wisconsin.

Pagac saw the Nissan follow a man on a bicycle in a left turn when there was an opening in traffic, but instead of turning the man on the bicycle stopped so they were both in the intersection. Other witness statements agree with Pagac's statement.

"It was avoidable," Pagac said. "She saw the truck and let up on the gas -- the light turned yellow and [the truck driver] kept coming."

The cost of repair, according to the accident report, is $10,000 for the Nissan and no cost specified for the truck. The owner of the truck is L.W. Miller Transport of Logan.

The Driver Vehicle Examination report stated numerous violations of Call and the truck he was driving. The inspection conducted by S. Prescott stated that 20 percent of the brakes were out of adjustment and Call did not have a medical certificate in his possession. "This vehicle is out of service for the violations indicated -- this vehicle shall not be operated until all out of service violations are repaired or corrected," stated the report.

Brown was cited for no proof of insurance and failure to yield in a left turn.
