"The heaviest restriction upon the freedom of public opinion is not the official censorship of the press, but the unofficial censorship by a press which exists not no much to express opinion as to manufacture it."

Logan rated No. 4 in list of emerging American cities

By Jack Saunders

April 5, 2004 | "I think it's downright groovy," says Mayor Doug Thompson.

Thompson, of course, is referring to Logan's high ranking in Cities Ranked and Rated. Of the top 45 "emerging" U.S. Metropolitan areas, Logan is ranked fourth.

According to Cities Ranked and Rated, "scenic beauty, nearby recreation" and "reasonable cost of living" are Logan's positive aspects, while "entertainment" is listed as negative.

"At least we can do something about the negative," says Bobbie Coray, president of the Cache Chamber of Commerce.

Coray said she's excited about the "prestigious" ranking and said it was due to many years of "political foresight."

"Now that we're recognized, we need to maintain a more concentrated effort," says Coray. "With recognition comes responsibly to keep up the quality of life here."

Thompson is also excited and says "it's great to be associated with cities of such high caliber."

Top Ten "Emerging" Areas:

  1. Ithaca, N.Y.
  2. Bend, Ore.
  3. Mount Vernon-Anacortes, Wash.
  4. Logan, Utah
  5. Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
  6. Prescott, Ariz.
  7. Vero Beach, Fla.
  8. Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, Va.
  9. Brunswick, Ga
  10. Idaho Falls, Idaho
