USU's Kermit Hall one of 12 on list for presidency at University of Tennessee

April 5, 2004 | The University of Tennessee has narrowed its presidential search to 12 --among them Utah State University President Kermit L. Hall.
Monday, the search committee narrowed the list from 47 to 12 and will conduct interviews of the remaining candidates April 13-15.
"This is a common situation for people who are as highly accomplished as President Hall," said John DeVilbiss, USU executive director of public relations. "It is normal for him to be sought out."
The UT Web site lists some of Hall's qualifications as president of Utah State University, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at North Carolina State University and dean of the College of Humanities and executive dean of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University.
DeVilbiss indicated that Hall has received similar offers in the past, but hasn't considered them seriously as he has this one.
"President Hall has told me that he is very happy here at Utah State University and is committed to Utah State," Devilbiss said.
Presidential searches like the one at UT are common in the educational field.
"It has become a normal part of the educational psyche for presidents to have short institutional life spans," Devilbiss said.
Other candidates include Jack O. Burns, vice president for Academic Affairs and Research, University of Colorado System; Brady Deaton, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, University of Missouri-Columbia; Karen Hitchcock, president, State University of New York at Albany; Thomas Meredith, chancellor, University System of Georgia; John Peters, president, Northern Illinois University, John Petersen, chancellor and provost for university affairs, University of Connecticut; and Bill W. Stacy, chancellor, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
