Millville residents get dumpster service for spring clean-up

By Hilary Judd

MILLVILLE -- A breath of "spring cleaning" fresh air whirls around the greening landscapes of Millville, and the city's decided it doesn't want to be left with the dust--literally.

Residents eagerly rid themselves and their property of excess materials, scraps and clutter during this time of year. To show appreciation to residents for beautifying their property and the entire community this season, the City Council voted to bring in a large dumpster and maintain it for a month--for free.

"We need to do it right away because people are [cleaning] right now," Mayor Gale Hall said. "It's time to get another dumpster."

Hall referred to the success Millville found with this idea last year, City Treasurer Tara Hobbs said. The city rented a dumpster from the landfill, placed it in a central location and set the dumping budget amount at $1,000. Once that was reached, the dumpster service would be terminated.

The filled dumpster was taken about twice a week to the landfill, weighed and emptied. Each dump cost around $200-300, depending on its weight, Hobbs said.

The city paid particular attention to the bill at the landfill, and the service even made it in under budget.

"We did really well, we were $18 under budget last year," Hobbs said, crediting the ability to keep costs so low to some restrictions on dumping.

"We didn't allow any tires, which are way expensive, at about $50 a tire."

Hobbs said she knows other towns have tried the same thing, without the tire restrictions, and gone "hugely" over budget.

"We also don't allow any paint, gas cans or anything hazardous," Hobbs said. "And we don't really want any box springs, either, because they take up so much room. But people usually do bring them."

Just like last year, residents will be notified of dumpster availability, as well as the $1,000 limit on dumping. The council stimated the set limit to last approximately one month.

"It's just a service that we do," Hobbs said, "instead of having people go pay for dumping, we bring it as a courtesy to them."

Millville residents may begin taking advantage of the dumpster service within the week, as soon as it arrives at its yet-undetermined city location. For questions about dumping or location, please contact Tara Hobbs at 752-3967.
