Millville Youth Council sworn in, organizes Easter celebration

By Hilary Judd

MILLVILLE -- Eight names, plus their owners' signatures, were added to the official roster of the Millville City Youth Council Wednesday as City Recorder Rose Mary A. Jones swore in and welcomed the new members.

The group of six females and two males--all Millville residents, and mostly neighbors--took the oath together, pledging to uphold their duties and work in the best interest of Millville.

"They submitted an application of interest, and then voted among themselves for specific offices," City Treasurer Tara Hobbs said.

The new members are Tiffany Wyatt, mayor; Samantha Kirby, recorder; Courtney Hahne, yreasurer; and a five-member council composed of Michelle Stevenson, Nick Eames, Kamille Chlarson, Casey Hart, and Holli Hobbs.

Working on a volunteer basis, the council will meet once a month, and is currently working on a bylaw agreement for all of their proceedings.

"One of the concerns we've heard is that the youth would like more involvement," Mayor Wyatt said. "We're just throwing around ideas right now, but are looking into watching movies or holding dances at the park."

Generating more involvement with the youth and sponsoring local activities while learning from and sustaining civic leaders are some of the council's goals. They recently attended a training conference, hosted by USU, with other youth councils from around the state that shared the same objectives.

"The pop machine [outside City Hall] money is theirs," Hobbs said about funding for the council. "They had about $450 last July, so they do pretty well with it."

An Easter celebration in Millville City Park is the group's first endeavor. The activity is an annual tradition in Millville, one previously put on by the city, and anxiously anticipated by children in the area. Upon assuming responsibility for this year's festivities, the youth council's planned activities include a candy-filled egg hunt, games, baby chick giveaways, a possible petting zoo and a visit from the Easter Bunny. The events are scheduled for April 19, and set to kick off at 1 p.m. Kids 12 and under, and their parents, are invited to the free community celebration. Bring a basket and "hoppy" holiday egg-citement!
