MENDON -- The town square is soon to be the new home of historic cabins that were originally built by early settlers of Mendon back in the 1870s.

Mendon city has located the original post office, as well as some other historical cabins and has plans to restore them. They will be moved onto town square just west of the city building, said Mayor Sydney Larson. One cabin will be put on the original site of the old fort; which was located on the south side of city square, he said.

"The early fort was built with a view of protection from the Indians that roamed the country during that time," according to Mendon's city website.

Along with these restoration plans, Larson says Mendon also is working on a historical walking tour of all these buildings along with existing historical sites throughout town. Some such sites include Pioneer Park, the James G. Willie house, and the cemetery where the early founders were buried.

The walking tour will either be implemented as part of Pioneer Day or as a separate heritage day celebration, he said.

By fall the city hopes to have at least one cabin finished and the old post office moved into place.

The city has applied for restaurant tax money to help with the costs, but is still waiting approval.
